Description
SPANISH SCHOOL, late 16th–early 17th century
Saint Lucy before a mountainous landscape
Panel (part of a wood panelling)
151 x 57 cm
(With imperfections, as is)
Note:
Our painting depicts Saint Lucy in front of a town set against a mountainous landscape. In accordance with traditional iconography, the saint is recognisable by the martyr’s palm she holds, as well as by the platter on which her eyes are laid out. This type of depiction allows us to date the work to the 17th century, following the development of this iconography after the Counter-Reformation.
Furthermore, this setting is characteristic of the 17th century, with its fortified city and rugged terrain. This city likely refers to Syracuse in Sicily, where Saint Lucy lived and was martyred in the 3rd century. Whilst the depiction remains idealised, it enables us to pinpoint the work’s geographical location.
The elongated format, the fact that it is painted on wood (probably poplar) and the full-length depiction of the saint seem to indicate that it is either an altarpiece panel or a decorative ornament adorning a religious building, attributable to a 17th-century Italian regional school.
Condition report:
