Description
18th-century FRENCH SCHOOL, after François BOUCHER (1703–1770) The Fishing Party; Putti with birds A pair of canvases forming an overdoor pair. Antique gilded and carved wooden frames with a scalloped shape, decorated with shells and floral scrollwork (wear and tear). 42 x 60 cm (viewable area) 72 x 83 cm including frame (wear and tear and missing sections) Note: This pair of overdoor panels forms a decorative ensemble characteristic of the Rococo style. Both compositions depict groups of putti in idealised pastoral landscapes, evoking the bucolic charm of the 18th century. The first depicts five putti fishing by a waterfall, equipped with a line and a landing net. The second shows four putti releasing birds from a cage, whilst one of them takes flight, held back by a string. The landscape is dominated in the background by a fortified town. These works reflect the influence of François Boucher’s light-hearted subjects and pastoral scenes. Our first painting directly echoes the composition of *Putti with Birds* (Honolulu Museum of Art, Inv. No. 8915.1), featuring cherubs arranged in identical poses, releasing birds within a similar bucolic landscape. The second painting is comparable to *Putti Fishermen* (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Inv. No. 58.15), depicting putti indulging in the pleasures of fishing with a line and a landing net. Beyond the subjects themselves, Boucher’s influence is evident in the depiction of the putti with their plump bodies and rounded faces, in keeping with the painter’s aesthetic canon. They are portrayed in dynamic and elegant poses. The pastoral landscapes also recall Boucher through the use of recurring motifs such as craggy rocks, streams and distant vistas.
