Description
A circular, double-valved encolpion in chiselled and repoussé silver, decorated on the obverse with the Virgin Theotokos in a praying posture, her arms outstretched and her hands open, holding the Infant Jesus in a mandorla (clipeus) against her chest. Iconographic type known as ‘platytera’ or ‘blachernitissa’. The Virgin is surrounded by a beaded nimbus, with two cartouches framing her head. The scene is set within a double concentric band, the outer border decorated with radiating fluting. On the reverse, a gemmed cross with equal arms, the ends adorned with fleurons, set within a smooth field bordered by a frieze of regular undulating motifs. Suspension rings around the rim. No hallmark. The Levant or Christian Syria, 19th century Diameter: 4.5 cm Weight: 23.8 g The iconography of this encolpion is part of a centuries-old tradition specific to the Christian workshops of the East, located across a vast region stretching from Georgia to Palestine, dating back to the 13th century and continuing until the early 20th century.
