A few creases and slight tears at the top
On the reverse, a label bearing the following inscription:
The Groves of Versailles
At every turn or bend, a fountain
adorned with a delicate rockery basin where one has
depicted, in naturalistic style, an Aesop’s fable, the
subject of which is marked by an inscription of
four lines engraved in gold letters on a
bronze plate painted black. These verses are by the late
Benserade, and serve to explain the fable.
Fable XXXVI
The Swan and the Crane
Here, the swan and the crane form two
utterly beautiful water jets.
The Crane asked the Swan, whose song
was far sweeter and more touching than usual:
‘What good news do you have, my sister?’
‘It is that I am going to die,’ said the Swan to the Crane.
