Description
Qajar Iran, late 19th century. Saddle axe, known as a ‘tabar’ or ‘tabarzin’, with a double blade, Qajar Iran, late 19th century Partially gilded steel axe with a double-bladed crescent-shaped head, featuring engraved and champlevé decoration comprising medallions filled with figures or animals against a background of foliage. Between the blades, a thrusting point with a central ridge and a base openwork featuring two facing makara heads. Damascened handle with bevelled sides, finished with a pear-shaped pommel with a bevelled base, which unscrews to reveal a dagger with a quadrangular blade. Length: 85 cm; Dagger length: 57 cm. Flaking gilding, particularly worn on the hilt; traces of oxidation and rust; slight twisting of the point. A similar example to this axe-dagger, also Qajar, is held in the Wallace Collection in London (OA 1556). Expert: Ms Camille Celier
