Pierre-François FEUCHERE (1737–1823), after a model by. An exceptional and very large CLOCK ‘Sans peur et sans reproche’ François I, kneeling on a ceremonial stool, his right arm outstretched and resting on the Grand Livre, adorned in his ostrich-feather sacramental cloak and wearing a medallion depicting the Archangel, as well as the scabbard of his sword Chevalier Bayard, with his arm outstretched, rests his sword on the nape of Francis I’s neck and knights him A sword rests on a ceremonial cushion, amongst the symbols of chivalry (shield, helmet). A bas-relief depicts the Muses making offerings to the knight Bayard, accompanied by François I’s motto: ‘Without fear and without reproach’ The white enamelled dial, displaying the hours in Roman numerals, is signed ‘Chonifsen à PARIS’ Chiselled and gilded bronze, sea-green marble Dated circa 1815 H. 72 cm – W. 55.5 cm – D. 23 cm Some parts have been reattached; the dial has been restored Provenance: Private collection, Calvados According to family tradition, this clock was commissioned by Cardinal FESCH, uncle of Napoleon I, from Monsieur GOUVE, a chaser
