Description
Henri Louis BOUCHARD (1875–1960). Cow being milked Bronze cast with a golden-brown patina, signed on the base Stamp: ‘Lost-wax casting, Bisceglia (founder)’ A plaque bears the inscription “Ministry of Agriculture – Hautes-Alpes Honourary Prize Competition 1928 – Agricultural Prize, 2nd category – Mr ADRIEN MARIN (sharecropper) – in Villarobert” H. 21 cm - W. 33.5 cm - D. 21 cm Note: This bronze by the sculptor Henri Bouchard (1875–1960), depicting a cow being milked, is an institutional agricultural trophy awarded in the early 20th century. The Ministry of Agriculture frequently commissioned this type of artwork from renowned sculptors to reward the most deserving farms during departmental competitions. The inscription engraved on the plaque indicates that this sculpture was awarded at the Hautes-Alpes ‘Prime d’Honneur’ Competition in 1928, in the ‘Prix cultural’ category. The recipient, Adrien Marin, is explicitly described as a sharecropper, meaning that he did not own the land but managed and worked it in return for a share of the harvest. The awarding of such a distinction to a sharecropper highlights the remarkably high standard of his farming practices. Finally, the reference to the village of Villarobert refers to a district within the municipality of Gap. This object thus combines the heritage value of a bronze sculpture signed by a member of the Academy of Fine Arts with a precise historical account of rural life in the Hautes-Alpes during the interwar period.
