LAGNIET (Jacques). A COLLECTION of the most illustrious proverbs, divided into three books: The first contains moral proverbs, the second cheerful and amusing proverbs, and the third depicts the lives of the poor through proverbs brought to light. Paris, Quai de la Mégisserie at Fort l’Evesque, undated (1657–1663), a set of three collections bound in one quarto volume, fawn calfskin, ribbed spine, richly decorated (caps and mouthpieces worn).
A precious collection that is rarely found complete. Our copy features a general frontispiece for all three books at the beginning of the volume. The first book (moral proverbs) comprises 60 numbered plates. Incomplete: plate 34 is missing. (Tears to plates 54 and 56).
The second book (humorous proverbs) comprises 73 numbered plates. Incomplete: plate 22 is missing.
The third book (The Life of the Beggars) comprises 30 numbered plates, including the title page. – 36 plates, including the title page, on the life of Tiel Ulespiegle, a native of Saxony. - The Adventures of Don Quixote.
