Constant SÉVIN (1821–1888) – Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE. Planter with two handles, decorated with masks, trophies and friezes of foliage garlands. Silver-plated bronze, lined on the inside, signed C. Attaroe H. 14 cm – L. 59 cm – D. 24.5 cm Note: A leading figure in the decorative arts of the Second Empire and the early Third Republic, Constant Sévin (1821–1888) maintained a close working relationship with the renowned founder and bronze artist Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892) that spanned more than thirty years, from 1855 until his death. As head of the design studio and official artistic director of the Barbedienne firm, Sévin designed a vast array of works of art—fireplace ornaments, candelabra, bowls, mirrors and pieces of furniture — in which his historicist erudition drew upon the traditions of ancient Greece, the Renaissance, Persia and Byzantium to forge the triumphant eclecticism of the nineteenth century. His genius is particularly evident in the revival of champlevé and cloisonné enamelling on bronze, a field in which the duo triumphed at the World’s Fairs, notably at the 1862 London Exhibition, where Sévin was awarded a first-class medal for ‘the artistic excellence of the furniture and bronzes’ he had designed, and subsequently in Paris in 1867 and 1878. Combining the technical perfection of Barbedien-style casting and chasing with the virtuoso inventiveness of its chief ornamentalist, this partnership is today recognised as one of the pinnacles of French industrial arts, with their most accomplished collaborative works commanding consistently high prices and attracting regular interest at international auctions as well as in museum collections (Musée d’Orsay, MAD Paris).
