18th-century FRENCH SCHOOL, in the style of Piat-Joseph SAUVAGE (1744–1818) Study of putti in grisaille Oil on canvas 24.5 x 19 cm Frame 33 x 28 cm (crackling, restorations) Note: This grisaille depicts a group of putti, in the style of Piat-Joseph Sauvage (1744–1818). Originally from Tournai, this artist specialised in the trompe-l’œil genre, imitating ancient bas-reliefs using grisaille, under the influence of the 17th-century master Jacob de Wit. Sauvage travelled to France and was admitted to the Académie Royale in 1781. He used the monochromatic nature of grisaille to imitate sculpture in painting, depicting classical subjects such as bacchanalia featuring putti. This theme, dear to the artist, is found in many of his works, such as *Bacchanal of Children*, held at the Louvre (1780–1790, RF 1985 89). This work revisits the subject with the rapid brushstrokes, sculpted modelling and play of shadows characteristic of Sauvage. Its small format and simplified details suggest that it may be a preparatory study for a final grisaille.
