Description
ASTRONOMICAL REGULATOR
Signed on the dial: ‘Lépine Hger du Roi 1780’; the movement features a pin escapement with a seconds hand.
The brass dial, engraved with Roman numerals, features four displays at its centre and a date window at 12 o’clock; at 11 o’clock is the day of the week and its astrological symbol, whilst opposite, at 1 o’clock, is the month and its zodiac sign.
At 8 o’clock are the indications for sunrise and sunset, showing the sun’s path, the length of the day indicated by shutters, and the mean time over 24 hours shown by a hand. Opposite, at 4 o’clock, are the phases and age of the Moon.
In the 19th or 20th century, this dial was trimmed to remove the height of the minutes (in fives) in Arabic numerals – the outlines of which can still be discerned – to accommodate this movement, which formerly featured a quarter-hour chime and equation of time, housed in a mahogany case lined with fragments of antique tapestries
The knife-suspension balance wheel consists of a simple wooden rod and a heavy lens.
