This mysterious and rare iconography depicts episodes from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh. On the left, Iskandar comes to consult the talking tree, which reminds him of his mortal condition. On the right, the two holy men, each of whom appears to be holding a fish, are thought to be the Prophets Khidr and Elias, whom Iskandar met at the Fountain of Life. This iconography is known from a painted glass plate for a magic lantern in the British Museum in London (Sykes.543).
