Description
Louis-Roland Trinquesse (1746-1799) Reader Sanguine on paper 360 x 292 mm. signed and dated lower right Trinquesse // cc 17 May 1778 This drawing by Louis-Roland Trinquesse exists in three versions, presumably all autographed. In addition to this drawing, an unsigned version is kept at the Musée d'Ixelles, and another, unsigned and undated but annotated, was sold in 1932. The latter presented the model as Marianne Franmery. Jean Cailleux brought together a group of around twenty drawings of this young woman drawn by the artist in the 1770s in an article devoted to Trinquesse's drawings ("The Drawings of Louis Roland Trinquesse", The Burlington Magazine, Vol. CXVI, No. 851, February 1974, pp.i-xi). She is best known for having been the artist's favourite model. Tristan Fourmy, in his recent article on the drawings of Louis Roland Trinquesse (Tristan Fourmy, 'Drawing outside the Académie: Trinquesse's Graphic Oeuvre Rediscovered', Master Drawings, Vol. 64, 1, Spring 2026, pp. 87-106) explains that drawings of female figures constitute the most famous part of the artist's graphic work. He produced more than seventy sheets between 1771 and 1786, which were very popular with private collectors. This drawing is included in the catalogue raisonné of the artist's works currently being compiled by Tristan Fourmy.
