This fine oil on panel is typical of the work of Gillis Gillisz de Bergh.
The artist was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who spent his entire career in Delft, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1624. Like other painters of his time, he also worked as an expert, appraising works of art for estates and lotteries. A specialist in still lifes, he first distinguished himself in kitchen scenes under the influence of his probable master Cornelis Jacobsz. Delff, before evolving towards a more elegant and refined style in the 1630s. Later influenced by masters such as Balthasar van der Ast, he is now best known for paintings such as this one.
