The artist was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who spent his entire career in Delft, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1624. A specialist in still lifes, he first distinguished himself in kitchen scenes under the influence of his probable master Cornelis Jacobsz. Delff, before evolving towards a more elegant and refined style in the 1630s. Later influenced by masters such as Balthasar van der Ast, he is now best known for paintings such as this one.
