Provenance
Madrid, Ansorena, 21 January 2020, lot 600
This copper of fine dimensions reproduces with minor variations a composition by Frans Francken II (1581-1642), itself inspired by compositions by his father Frans Francken I (1542-1616) and Marten de Vos (1532-1603). The original painting is probably the one in the Hermitage Museum (inv. ГЭ-410).
The production of copies and replicas was central to the business model of Frans Francken II's workshop in order to meet a large demand, almost every original composition by Frans Francken II was reproduced in widely varying qualities. Our painting is undoubtedly one of these fine copies, as its precious support attests. Moreover, the number 210 on the reverse suggests that it once formed part of an important collection.
