Pietro Paolo Raggi (1646 Genoa - 1724 Bergamo) Charity Oil on canvas, lined 96 x 108 cm. Provenance : Monteux, Private Collection Cavaillon, Hôtel d'Agar Collection The attribution of the work has been confirmed by Antonio Gesino. Pietro Paolo Raggi was an Italian painter trained in Venice and active mainly in Genoa and Bergamo. He was described as an artist with an unstable and irascible temperament and led a wandering life between several towns in northern Italy. Renowned for his talent in restoring or completing master paintings, he was also known for his penchant for wine, which his commissioners sometimes used as leverage to speed up his work. His pupils included his children, notably his son Giovanni, who was a pupil of Giambattista Tiepolo. Roman Charity, depicted by a woman breast-feeding an old man, was inspired by a story told by the ancient historian Valerius Maximus: a young woman, Pero, secretly breast-feeds her father Cimon, condemned to starvation in prison, in order to save him. A symbol of filial piety and devotion, it is also an allegory of universal compassion.
