French school, 18th century, after Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745) Portrait of Stanislas I Leszczynski (1677-1766), former King of Poland, Duke of Lorraine Oil on canvas 134 x 110 cm. Provenance : Marcol family, councillors at the Sovereign Court of Lorraine, State Councillors, Procurators-General of Lorraine and Barrois, etc. Our painting is a copy of the portrait of Stanislas I Leszczinski, King of Poland painted by Jean-Baptiste van Loo, of which a few rare examples are known: one is kept in Warsaw (132 x 105 cm, National Museum, inv. 129367). On the back, an old annotation designates a very honourable family of the Lorraine nobility, the Marcols, as the former owners of this portrait, which recalls the popularity of "the good King Stanislas", the last Duke of Lorraine.
