Portrait of Lieutenant Claude Étienne Debrand (1771-1856), veteran of the Saint-Domingue expedition of 1801-1803

Inscribed lower right and left:
"I was born in Chamblay on the fourth of August 1771. I volunteered during the Revolution of 1789. I fought in all the campaigns and was wounded three times. In the year nine, peace was made and the army returned to France. At the end of the year an army was formed to go and fight the negroes on the island of St Domingue who were in revolution and commanded by Toussaint-Louverture. I was seriously wounded there and had to leave the service.
This portrait was painted in 1851 at the age of 80.
