Description
BEAUQUESNE Wilfrid Constant, 1847-1913, War nurses caring for the wounded on the battlefield, 1897, oil on canvas signed and dated lower right (restorations), wax stamp of the artist lower left with his initials, bears a lacunar exhibition label lower left, on the back of the stretcher a n°3711 in blue chalk, packer's label on the back of the frame 60x73 cm. During the Franco-Prussian War, the military infirmary services were overwhelmed. Following the creation of the Red Cross and the Société de Secours aux blessés militaires (SSBM) in 1864, it became possible to call on civilians to treat the war wounded. It was during the 1870 war that women, both nuns and civilians, were allowed to care for soldiers on the battlefield for the first time. Wilfrid Constant Beauquesne was a military painter who specialised in depicting the 1870 war. The composition focuses on the drama of the wounded on the battlefield and the calm of the religious nurses helping them.
