Description
VERLAINE, Paul (1844-1896). Autograph poem entitled "XVII". S.l.n.d. 1 page in-8 with a small addition of paper at the foot. Two erasures, one with a correction in the margin.
"To the glory of My suffering / Instrument of your deliverance".
Very beautiful poem by Paul Verlaine: "All the loves of the earth / Leave in the heart the noxious / And the horribly bitter, / Fraternal and conjugal, / Paternal and filial / Civic and national, / The carnal, the ideal / All have the wasp and the worm. / Death takes your father and your mother, / Your brother will betray his brother, / Your wife will sniff out another husband, / Your child will be alienated from you / Your people will be plundered or chained / And foreigners will pour out their hatred / Your flesh will become irritated and obscene, / Your soul will float away in mad dreams / But, says Jesus, love, no matter what / Then from every dead illusion / Make a procession, form a chorus, / Go ahead, like a shepherd in the fields [...]".
These verses were published in his poetry collection Sagesse under the number XVIII. In one corner, Verlaine wrote and then crossed out the word "Bonheur", the title of another of his collections, published by Léon Vanier.
On the back of the folio, Verlaine has written in ink: "Divers à voir" then "Quelques unes / notices et croquis littéraires". In pencil: "Edmond Bailly / chez Dentu / Place Valois". Edmond Bailly was a young bookseller working for the publisher Dentu.
