Description
[ENTOMOLOGY]. LATREILLE, Pierre-André (1762-1833), French entomologist. Set of 3 autograph letters signed, addressed to his publisher. Paris and s.l., 15 December 1815, 3 and 30 September 1818. 3 pp. in-4. About the disrupted printing of a work by Cuvier. Latreille is furious and warns his publisher Déterville that no further changes to articles or proofs may be made without his express authorisation, which comes from the zoologist Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest (1784-1838). He added: "I warn you that M. Desmarets will no longer see my proofs last, and that he will not add any article to my part, not even a simple reference [...]". In a third letter, Latreille, who was ill, delegated a work to his fellow botanist, zoologist and member of the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle Louis Augustin Guillaume Bosc d'Antic (1759-1828). Latreille had just published several volumes of his Nouveau dictionnaire d'histoire naturelle with Déterville (in 1817 and 1818) and is probably referring here to his Mémoires sur divers sujets de l'Histoire naturelle des insectes, which were published by Derville in 1819. Also included -PRÊTRE, Jean-Gabriel (1768-1849), Franco-Swiss painter at the Natural History Museum in Paris. He illustrated a wide variety of animals: birds, mammals and reptiles, molluscs and illustrated numerous publications. L.A.S. December 1848. 1 p. in-8. He sends Guérin "a bad joke which I think is a bit like me. This is a case of asking the intentional question, which is to paint my portrait [...]". He signs "J. G. Prêtre Peintre du Museum d'histoire naturelle de Paris". - SERRES, Marcel de. Interesting letter written in his name. S.l.n.d. 1 p. in-8. Serres sends Lemercier some documents, except for the articles on lost races. He says that he is looking for a publisher for a work entitled "Animals and plants whose analogues can no longer be found on the surface of the earth, can they be considered as the stock of the present races? This work will be about 200 pages long [...]".
