Large cut-out panel depicting the Ramakien. Large-scale Thai shadow theatre (known as ‘Nang Yai’ in Thai), late 19th–early 20th century: three seated figures are gathered against a backdrop of a princely palace. The material is finely cut buffalo leather, now mounted on a cotton backing and set within a wooden frame, with backlighting: a functional assembly dating from 1975. - The scene depicts one of the many episodes from the RAMAKIEN, a local variant of the Indian epic the RAMAYANA, the legendary story of King RAMA. - This episode depicts (in the centre) the treacherous giant and demon king TOTSAKAN, who has forcibly abducted the beautiful SITHÂ (on the right), the loving wife of King RAMA. He holds her captive in his palace in the kingdom of LANKA (now Sri Lanka), for dishonourable purposes! On the left, lascivious and jealous of the faithful SITHÂ, stands one of TOTSAKAN’s concubines. - Later, according to legend, HANUMAN, the monkey king and ally of RAMA, will come with his army of flying monkeys to rescue the queen and bring her back to her royal husband… - During stage performances, the dozens of episodes depicted here unfold one after the other to the accompaniment of traditional songs and instrumental music. 175 x 175 cm.
