Born in Antwerp to a Protestant family forced to emigrate to Middelbourg, it was probably in this city that Adriaen van Stalbemt received his first training. The Twelve Years' Truce allowed him to return to Antwerp in 1609. He spent most of his career there, with the exception of a trip to England in 1633-1634 at the request of King Charles I.
A gifted painter and engraver, best known for his landscapes, he also excelled in other genres such as allegory, history and descriptions of amateur cabinets. He was also called upon to animate the paintings of Jan Brueghel the Younger, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Frans II Francken, Pieter Neefs and Hendrick van Steenwijck the Younger with his figures and animals.
Stalbemt's work was inspired by a wide range of artists including Adam Elsheimer, Gillis van Coninxloo, Paul Bril, Hendrick van Balen and Jan Brueghel the Elder.
The very good state of conservation of our work and the exquisite rendering of the details that make it up allow us to appreciate today what made the artist's reputation at the time. Klaus Ertz places our painting in the 1620s, "still under the influence of John [Brueghel] the Elder". It is part of a group of a dozen compositions produced in the 1620s and 1630s, combining the village view and the river landscape without belonging to either of the two genres, and suggesting an artist who was already experienced and at ease with the combination of two major compositional themes.
