Cartel and its doucine console, straight frame, arched at the top, in Boulle marquetry of brown tortoiseshell and cut brass with Berain-style decoration of foliage, masks, flowering trellises, birds, figures and dogs. Beautiful ormolu fittings such as water-leaf frames, leafy clawed feet, female masks and flower falls. Shock absorber in the form of an angel sharpening a scythe (symbolising Time). Gilt bronze platinum dial decorated with musical instruments, birds and roosters, set with Roman numeral cartouches and inscribed on the rim with Arabic numerals indicating the hours and minutes. Signed "Hanet à Paris". Around 1657, in The Hague, the Dutch mathematician and physicist Christian Huygens created the first pendulum clock with the help of the clockmaker Salomon Coster. This was a veritable revolution, and Nicolas Hanet trained with him and brought the invention back to France.
