Ottmar Elliger the Younger (1666-1735), Workshop of The Dance of Salome Oil on canvas 54.5 x 67.5 cm Re-backed, restorations Born in Hamburg, Ottmar Elliger the Younger was a pupil of his father, Ottmat Elliger the Elder. He then studied in Amsterdam with Michel van Musscher, and from 1686 onwards with Gérard de Lairesse, with whom he collaborated in the creation of decorations. In 1716, Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn appointed him court painter at Mainz. Our composition is a replica of a painting seen on the art market, the counterpart of which is Achilles discovered among the daughters of Lycomedes (Anonymous sale, London Philip's, 6 December 1988, lot 75, coloured illus.; Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, 12 December 1995, lot 86, coloured illus.) Another autograph version, with a few variations, is in the Serpouhkov Museum of Art and History. In a gilded wood and paste frame, 19th century.
