Description
A ‘Jansenist’ Christ, carved from ivory, depicted with a realistic sense of suffering, the anatomy highlighting the muscles, veins and the entire agonising posture of Christ, evident in his body, his bent knees, his head with long hair tilted back, his eyes bulging, and his mouth open, revealing his teeth and tongue.
His hands are nailed to the cross, his fingers curled; his feet are placed side by side.
A knotted perizonium encircles Christ’s lower abdomen.
His tongue is positioned at the back of his head.
Christ is depicted without a crown, which in these fine sculptures was often a separate element.
Fleurons, attached to the cross, depict three chubby-cheeked angels on a cloud.
A titulus, attached to the cross, bears the engraved acronym ‘INRI’.
