Description
Garland bearer, Decorative element of a stupa Grey schist Gandhara art, Afghanistan or Pakistan, 3rd-4th century Height 16.5 cm Gandhara is a region located between Peshawar, the Swat Valley and Taxila in north-west Pakistan. It was conquered in 330 BC by Alexander the Great, who introduced Hellenistic art and exerted a major influence on the art of statuary in the region for over seven centuries. Thanks to its strategic position on the silk trade routes, the Gandhara region was very prosperous. Under the Kushan dynasty, numerous Buddhist sites were founded, most of them organised around a monastery and a stupa. Decorated with narrative reliefs recounting the life of the Buddha, other sculptures such as this one depicting garland bearers completed the decor of these stupas. On this piece, a male figure is depicted seated, in a frontal position, holding a garland of flowers in his hands. As in other Gandhara sculptures, a turban is tied in his hair. On either side of his body is a leaf and a scroll.
