Théophie VAUCHELET The poor young girl Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right 1832. Exhibited at the Salon of 1833 under the title "la pauvre jeune fille" ("the poor young girl") 86,5 x 114 cm Théophile Vauchelet (1802-1873) : Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1829. The painting was exhibited at the 1833 Salon. The subject of the painting is certainly not unrelated to the cholera epidemic that began in Paris in February 1832 and took on exceptional proportions from the end of March. The epidemic claimed 12,884 lives in April and ended in September. Chateaubriand, reporting on the plague that ravaged Paris, wrote in his Mémoires d'Outre-tombe: "In the rue du Cherche-Midi, vans from the artillery depots were serving the corpses. In the rue de Sèvres, which was completely devastated, especially on one side, hearses went from door to door; they could not meet the demand; people shouted at them through the window: 'Hearse, here!
