Description
TWO 18th-CENTURY FAIENCE STATUETTES, MAYBE LILLE Representing a richly dressed Chinese female figure, with blue, brown, ochre and manganese decoration, one with restored head; small chips and scratches H. 22 cm (8 ½ in.) Provenance: Galerie Lefebvre, Paris ; One of the two statuettes is almost certainly from the collection of "Monsieur Cussac à Lille". Bibliography: Dossier de l'art, n° 30, June-July 1996, p. 27 ; H. Havard, Histoire de la faïence de Delft, Paris, 1878, warning page, preface lettering. Exhibition: In the exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille organised around the symposium on Artistic exchanges as cultural vectors between China and Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, 2016. Two 18th century faience figures, possibly Lille This model is also known in Delft faience, which is why these two statuettes were once attributed to Delft. Other similar examples in Delft faience are known, including two in the collections of the Musée de Saumur, formerly attributed to Nevers, and illustrated by Antoinette Faÿ-Hallé and Christine Lahaussois in Une collection d'exception, Les céramiques du Château-Musée de Saumur, Dijon, 2017, p.220, n.289; another model was recently presented at Bonham's in Paris, 22 April 2026, lot 172. After a great deal of research and comparison, it would appear that these two statuettes, long attributed to Delft, are much closer to production in Lille.
