TWO DELFT FAIENCE PLATES FROM THE LATE 17th CENTURY Contoured and gadrooned, resting on a heel, with blue, green and ochre decoration and cold enamelled red highlights, in the centre the portrait of William of Orange between the initials W and R and two tulips, the side decorated with a floral frieze, one with a small crack; small chips and scratches, wear. D. approximately 24 cm (circa 9 ½ in.) Provenance: Galerie Aardewerk, The Hague. Exhibition: Musée national de Sèvres, La Faïence européenne au XVIIe siècle, Paris, 2003, p.209, n° 171. Two Dutch-Delft faience dishes, late 17th century William III of Orange-Nassau (1650-1702), known as Willem in Holland, became King of England and Ireland as William III and King of Scotland as William II in 1689.
