D. 45.5 cm (18 in.) Bibliography : Jean Rosen, La faïence de Nevers 1585-1900, T.2, L'Age d'or du XVIIe siècle, Dijon, 2009, p. 277, fig. 434 ; Dossier de l'art, no. 30, June-July 1996, p. 26; Répertoire de la faïence française, Paris, 1932, T.II, Pl. 33A. An important armorial Nevers faience dish, mid-17th century This decoration was inspired by Albrecht Dürer's Adoration of the Magi engraved around 1503 (see Fig.1). The coat of arms is probably for the Souchet family, originally from Angoumois and Limousin, Sires of Villars, Gentils, La Plante and Macquieville; the initials could be for Henry du Souchet. This dish illustrates the transitional period between Italian production in the 16th century, with its frieze decoration, and French production.
