A late 18th century gilt-bronze and black marble pot-pourri vase and its cover
The bronze satyr heads on the handles of our example are reminiscent of the work of the bronzemaker and chiseller Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843); similar satyr masks can be found on a pair of tazza attributed to Thomire and in the Wallace Collection, London, and on a mounted vase in the Getty Museum also attributed to this famous bronzemaker (cf. H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol I, p. 268, figs. 4.9.10 and 4.9.11).
