late nineteenth century box set By Susse Frères Entirely sheathed in leather decorated with herons and floral foliage in diamond-shaped medallions, the front dotted with Japanese ivory masks from the Meiji period punctuated by columns, the lid revealing an interior lined with old pink velvet, signed "Susse Frès 31. Place de la Bourse Paris"; minor accidents H. 25 cm (10 in.) l. 36,5 cm (14 ½ in.) P. 28 cm (11 in.) A late 19th century leather upholstered and japanese ivory casket, retailed by Susse Frères, Paris Better known today as the most prolific and oldest sculpture foundry in Western Europe, Susse Frères ran a large shop at 31, place de la Bourse, between 1828 and 1925. As publishers, they offered a range of art-related products, including books and stationery. Our set reflects the influence of Japanese decorative arts in France at the end of the 19th century. Very rare in the Maison Susse corpus, only one other comparable example is known to us to date; it was presented for sale at Christie's New York on 25 October 2004, lot 240. *Information for buyers: In accordance with current regulations, ivory lots have a CIC and are in free circulation within the European Union.
