Jean-Esprit Marcellin (1821-1884), second half of the 19th century Flora or the Return of Spring Marble figure Resting on a fully carved base; signed 'E. MARCELLIN'. H. 53 cm (20 ¾ in.) l. 30 cm (11 ¾ in.) P. 32 cm (12 ½ in.) Comparative bibliography: S. Lami, Dictionnaire des Sculpteurs de l'Ecole Française au XIXe siècle, t. III, Paris, 1919, pp. 389-392. A marble figure, depicting Flora, or the Return of Spring, by Jean-Esprit Marcellin (1821-1884), second half of the 19th century A pupil of the sculptor François Rude (1784 - 1855), he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1844 and exhibited at the Salon for the first time in 1845. He won second-class medals in 1851 and 1855 and repeat medals in 1857 and 1859. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1862. His official commissions in Paris include several sculptures for the facade of the Louvre, the Tuileries Palace, the Hôtel de Ville, the Opéra and the churches of the Sorbonne and Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais. He was also responsible for the pediment of the Hôtel de Ville in Marseille and the marble group of the Shepherd Cyparisse holding his fawn, which he inadvertently killed, in the Musée de Grenoble, n°PFH-4951. His best-known work is undoubtedly the Bacchante on her way to the sacrifice, which was once in the Musée du Luxembourg and now adorns one of the flowerbeds in front of the Élysée Palace, on the garden side.
