Félix Benneteau-Desgrois (1879-1966) The dance of fire Bronze group With the founder's stamp CIRE PERDUE/LABLANC BARBEDIENNE & FILS / A PARIS; resting on a yellow Sienna marble Dimensions (bronze) : 63 x 38 cm (24 ¾ in.) Dimensions (marble base) : 68 x 17 cm (26 ¾ x 3 ¾ in.) A bronze sculpture depicting The Dance of Fire, by Félix Benneteau-Desgrois (1879-1966) Félix Auguste Benneteau-Desgrois was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1904, and entered the studios of Alexandre Falguière, Antonin Mercié and then Denys Puech. In 1904, he was awarded a second Grand Prix de Rome1 and in 1909 he won the first Grand Prix. He lived at the Villa Médicis in Rome from January 1910 to December 1913. Appointed professor at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, Félix Benneteau-Desgrois included the African-American sculptor Augusta Savage among his students. He regularly took part in various art exhibitions, notably the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants between 1895 and 1945, and the Salon des artistes français. He died in Nogent-sur-Marne on 5 November 1963. The group was inspired by a fresco depicting a mythological Dionysian scene on slate with polychrome marble inlays, discovered in Pompeii in 1845 and now in the Archaeological Museum in Naples.
