A bronze figure of a male nude with buckle and sword, Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815 - 1891)
Meissonier's sculptures are characterised by a remarkable spontaneity, due to their primary function as preparatory studies for his paintings. Some were cast by Siot-Decauville, but this example was probably made under the artist's supervision. It bears the pastille with his profile portrait by Jules-Clément Chaplain (1839-1909), official medallist to the French government. A wax and leather statuette dated between 1873 and 1878 is held at the Musée d'Orsay (RF 2018 1) and has been on deposit for several years at the Musée des Beaux art de Lyon (B 1643-b), while a bronze is held at the Musée de Grenoble (Inv. MG 1215).
