MEISSEN PORCELAIN SEALED LETTER BOX CIRCA 1755 The vermeil mounting, goldsmith Alexandre-Jean-Marie Leferre, insculpation,1837, Paris, circa 1840 Paris, circa 1840 Rectangular, framed with wavy fillets; the lid inscribed "à Celle qui scait se taire" surmounting a mavelot; the interior decorated with a gallant scene or a floral design on a blue background, the reverse imitating an envelope closed with a red seal. Marks : Goldsmith A.L Small guarantee, boar's head H. 2.6 cm (1 in.) L.: 9 cm (3 ½ in.) P. 5,7 cm (2 ¼ in.) Gross weight : 126 gr. A silver-gilt mounted and porcelain box, the porcelain Meissen circa 1755, the mounts by Alexandre-Jean-Marie Leferre, Paris, circa 1840 This box can be compared with a similar snuffbox in the Timothy B. Schroder collection in London (see C. Truman, The Gilbert Collection Of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1991, pp. 264-266).
