Description
REGENCY PERIOD CONSOLE TABLE In carved and gilded walnut, with a restored Portor marble top, the belt decorated with canals, asparagus stems and flowers, supported by four double console jambs surmounted by satyr heads, finished with capridé sabots and joined by a double Y-shaped brace. H. 86 cm (33 ¾ in.) l. 132 cm (52 in.) P. 65 cm (25 ½ in.) A Regence giltwood console Made in the early Regency period, this console retains traces of the Louis-Quatorzian style typical of the years after 1700. It is characterised by a remarkable anthropomorphic decoration; the satyr mascarons in the upper part of the jambs are reminiscent of elements inspired by architectural decoration or the bronzes of cabinetry. The quality and richness of its execution are reminiscent of the ornamental repertoire of well-known ornamentalists and sculptors; in this respect, it is worth remembering that the satyr theme found in the upper part of the jambs can be found in numerous plates from the collection "Livre de Tables de Diverses Formes (...) inventé par J.B.Toro" by Jean-Bernard Honoré Turreau, known as Toro, held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (see figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4). These masks can also be compared with the drawings of consoles and mascarons for frame borders, wall brackets and table legs by Matthieu Legoupil, kept at the Kunstbibliothek in Berlin (cf. B. Pons, De Paris à Versailles, pl. 370-374), which include around fifteen mascarons with various expressions very similar to those found on our console. (see fig. 5). The general structure of the uprights and brace can be compared with an engraving by Pierre Le Pautre (c. 1652-1716), published in his Livre de Tables qui sont dans les Apartemens du Roy sur lesquelles sont posées des Bijoux du Cabinet des Médailles (see fig. 6).
