A pair of Italian Neoclassical giltwood consoles, probably Roman, in the taste of Giovanni Battista Piranesi
This pair of consoles, with their characteristic bucranium decoration, is representative of the style promoted by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (died 1778). An emblematic figure of Italian neoclassicism, this great architect exerted a major influence on the decorative arts in Rome in the 1760s and 1770s, not least thanks to the publication of his work Diverse Maniere d'adornare i cammini e ogni altra parte degli effici.
The uprights of our consoles, adorned with bucrania and finished with leafy caprid hooves, are echoed in a large number of the engravings contained in this collection (see figs. 1-2). A console table stylistically similar to our pair sold at Christie's New York on 27 September 2000, lot 460 (see fig. 3). Finally, the same frieze with a large acanthus leaf motif can be found on a Roman console table in the collections of the Palazzo Caetani in Rome (cf. E. Colle, Il Mobile Neoclassico in Italia, Electa, Milan, 2000, p. 110).
