PAIR OF PANELS FROM THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY Attributed to Thomas Compigné In gilded pewter, silvered and painted polychrome, decorated with port cities animated with sailors and architecture, in carved and gilded wood frames from the later period; small accidents, wear to the decoration. Size (unframed): 15 x 11 cm (6 x 4 ¼ in.) A pair of gilt, silvered and polychrome decorated pewter panels, second half of the 18th century, attributed to Thomas Compigne This Compigné collection is a perfect illustration of the genius and talent of Thomas Compigné, Louis XV's preferred table-maker, who came from Italy and set up shop in Paris on rue Greneta under the Roi David sign. He attracted a large clientele with his boxes, tric-trac games, snuffboxes and cane handles in blond tortoiseshell inlaid with gold. He also specialised in the production of precious paintings, the technique of which is still a mystery and which today bear his name. A sheet of tin is stamped and applied to a sheet of tortoiseshell or cardboard, then decorated with gold, silver, gouache and coloured varnish. However, the process used to fix all these materials onto the pewter is unknown. The Almanach Dauphin of 1777, listing the main merchants and craftsmen in France, described Compigné as follows: "This skilful artist has just executed new snuffboxes in camayeu worked on the lathe, on which are sculpted in relief perspectives of landscapes and castles, in accordance with the designs given to him as models". Our set is a perfect illustration of Compigné's body of work, in which some of his favourite subjects of inspiration are landscapes animated with figures, pastoral scenes and genre scenes, all exalted by a great finesse of line, a mastery of perspective effects and a skilful play of contrasting colours.
