Description
TRANSITION PERIOD HALF-MOON CONSOLE TABLE In the taste of Jean-François de Neufforge and Jean Charles Delafosse In carved limewood, relacquered cream and redoré, top in white veined marble, the belt decorated with an openwork frieze decorated with a double intertwined Grecque, the jambs decorated with piasters, twisted ribbons and pearls, surmounted by lion's heads holding a ring and joined by a brace decorated with an antique urn, the lamp base decorated with acanthus leaves; small accidents and missing gilding. H. 89 cm (35 in.) l. 128 cm (50 ½ in.) P. 56 cm (22 in.) A Transitional parcel-gilt and cream lacquered demi-lune console, in the taste of Jean-François de Neufforge and Jean Charles Delafosse The carved decoration on this console is directly inspired by the work of Jean-François de Neufforge (1714-1791) and Jean Charles Delafosse (1734-1789), two of the most important architects and ornamentalists of the second half of the 18th century and promoters of the classical revival in reaction to the Rococo style. The general structure of our console table can be compared with that shown in an engraving by Neufforge, Plan et Décoration de Lambris pour un Cabinet (see fig. 1); as for the carved decoration, the intertwined double Greek frieze on the belt of our example can be found in another engraving by Neufforge (see fig. fig. 2), while the lion's heads above the uprights and the urn on the brace, whose handles are decorated with grotesque figures, can be found in two engravings by Delaforge (see figs. 3-4).
