A soft-paste Sevres porcelain plate, 18th century, circa 1773
This plate comes from a service whose decoration is described as "garlands of greenery and daisies" and delivered on 28 September 1773 to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by Emmanuel-Armand de Vignerot du Plessis-Richelieu, Duc d'Aiguillon. It is listed in three parts entitled "1ᵉ Service", "2ᵉ Service" and "Dessert" (Arch. Sèvres, Vy5, f° 89v).
This service appears among the "Présens du Roi à l'occasion du Mariage de Monseigneur le Comte d'Artois" intended for the "Grands Officiers et autres personnes du Cortege et Service Piedmontois", i.e. the presents charged to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and offered by Louis XV to the members of the Court and Government of Sardinia on the occasion of the marriage of Charles-Philippe, Count of Artois, to Maria Theresa of Savoy, third daughter of Vittorio Amedeo III, King of Sardinia. The formalities for the marriage were completed by proxy on 24 October 1773 in Moncalieri, and the ceremony took place on 16 November 1773 at the Château de Versailles. The service is referred to simply as "Un Service de porcelaine de Seve" valued at 12,936 livres, and the recipient specified as "M. le Cᵗᵉ. de la Trinté, Grand Maitre et principal Commissaire à la remise", namely Vittorio Amedeo Filiberto Costa, 9ᵉ Conte di Trinità, Signore di Carrù, etc., Gran Maestro della Casa Reale" (Grand Master of the Household of the King of Sardinia). A large part of the service was sold by Sotheby's in New York in 1971 and is now in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia. Another part of the service was sold in Milan in 2003 (Sotheby's, Milan, 21 October 2003, lot 402). See David Peters, op. cit, no. 73-4, pp. 495-496. One plate was part of the former Charles-Otto Zieseniss collection, Christie's sale, Paris, 5-6 December 2001, lot 264.
