18th CENTURY SÈVRES TENDER PORCELAIN LITRON GOBELET AND SUCTION, DATED 1788 From the service of the Countess d'Artois, of the third magnitude, decorated "rich in colour and rich in gold" with roses and pansies in medallions surrounded by pearls on a blue and pink ground on braids of roses and barbs between garlands of foliage on a carmine ground. Marked : LL interlaced, letter date LL for 1788, mark of the painter Nicolas Rousselle H. 6 cm (2 ¼ in.) D. 12.5 cm (5 in.) Provenance : Service rich in gold and rich in colour delivered to Marie-Thérèse de Savoie, Countess of Artois, on 27 June 1789. A soft-paste Sevres porcelain cup and its saucer, 18th century, dated 1788, from the countess d'Artois' service In January 1784, Marie-Antoinette ordered a service from Sèvres for her personal use at Versailles. However, the same year, Louis XVI gave it to Gustav III as a diplomatic gift to commemorate the Swedish king's visit to France. The Queen's service was put back into production and delivered to the sovereign on 26 August 1784. Five years later, a third service with the same decoration, described in the manufactory's registers at "It was ordered by Marie-Antoinette's sister-in-law, the Countess of Artois "for Versailles". The service comprised 228 pieces, including 96 plates (soup and plain), priced at 33 livres each. The service was accompanied by tea service pieces including 1 tea caddy 1st at 48 livres, 1 tea caddy 2nd at 36 livres, 12 goblets 2nd at 42 livres, 12 goblets 3rd at 36 livres, 3 sugar pots at 48 livres, 2 teapots at 48 livres, 2 cream pots at 48 livres and 2 milk bowls at 48 livres.
