Description
18th CENTURY SÈVRES TENDER PORCELAIN LITRON GOBELET AND SUCTION, DATED 1778 Of the fourth size with polychrome decoration of birds in flight in reserves on a background of imbricated scales in blue and gold Marked : LL interlaced, letter-date AA for 1778, mark of the painter Antoine-Joseph Chappuis and mark of the painter Guillaume Noël H. 4.5 cm (1 ¾ in.) D. 10.5 cm (4 in.) A soft-paste Sevres porcelain cup and its saucer, 18th century, dated 1778, the painting by Antoine-Joseph Chappuis and Guillaume Noel This cup was part of a large lunch made by the Sèvres manufactory in 1777 and 1778. The payments to the painters Noël and Chappuis and the loading registers reveal the composition of this lunch, comprising a teapot, a milk jug, a sugar jug, a bowl, six second size litron goblets and twelve fourth size litron goblets, described in gold as birds and tortoiseshell (Arch. Sèvres, VjI, f° 207r, f° 83v and VlI, f°1r). The teapot, sugar pot, milk jug and four litron goblets, two of which are of the second size and two of the fourth size, are kept at Knole House, Kent, England. The milk jug is in the Wallace Collection (cfr. R. Savill, The Wallace colleciton, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, 1988, vol. II, n° C374, p. 595-596). Two other goblets of the fourth size are in an American collection, one possibly from the former Cholmondeley and later Antique Porcelain Company collection. Rosalind Savill has suggested that the service minus six goblets may have been purchased by the dealer Dulac in the first half of 1778 and subsequently sold to the third Duke of Dorset (1745-1799).
