An early Restauration gilt and patinated bronze mounted, parcel-gilt, mahogany, ebony and maple tree commode, stamped by Louis Alexandre Bellangé, circa 1820
This elegant commode, combining a skilful choice of the finest mahogany and finely carved bronze ornamentation, is stamped by Louis Alexandre Bellangé (1796-1891), a member of the eponymous dynasty of cabinet-makers active in Paris in the first half of the 19th century.
Official suppliers to the imperial furniture guard, the Bellangé family continued to actively supply the Crown under the Restoration, with numerous orders for Louis Philippe and Charles X.
Because of its shape, which is still resolutely Empire, it seems appropriate to date our example from the very early 1820s, when Louis-Alexandre joined his father Pierre-Antoine's workshop. Its bronze trim is reminiscent of the ornaments often applied to wood on chairs from the Bellangé workshop.
Although it is not possible to associate this commode with a specific delivery, we feel it is worth pointing out the existence of a psyche, also signed by Bellangé, combining uprights surmounted by gilt bronze Corinthian capitals, bronze claw feet and ornamentation along the frame with stylised foliage and flowers comparable to that on our commode; The latter was sold at Christie's Monaco on 17 June 1986, lot 666 and is illustrated in Sylvain Cordier's monograph, BELLANGE, ébénistes Une histoire du goût au XIXe siècle, Mare & Martin, 2012, p. 511, cat. LAB15.
