"TOLÉRANCE & CORDIALITÉ" (lodge no. 155); a lodge in conflict with the Grand Orient under the Second Empire:
Set of 32 documents including - numerous L.A.S. and copies of L.A.S.
(correspondence between presidents of the lodge, president of the Supreme Council, Minister of the Interior, Senator and Prefect of the Rhône, etc.), - several handwritten tables of members of the lodge at different dates, - handwritten minutes, - extracts from registers of decrees of the Prefect of the Rhône, - authorisations for meetings and installations, - invitations to ceremonies, - two
official illustrated certificates on vellum from Glasgow's Lodge Dramatic (1905), etc.
Two of these L.A.S. illustrate the conflict between the "Tolérance & Cordialité" lodge and the Grand Orient de France:
- from Brother PLANTARD, President of the Lodge, to Brother GUIFFREY, Grand Chancellor of the Scottish Rite in Paris: "[...] our enemies use slander and backbiting, and to these infamies they add that of denunciation! [...] They have pointed out to the former Minister, the Duke of Padoue, two members of the new administration, and have denounced them as Republicans with subversive ideas! that I have behind me and who belong to the new Lodge, are all ready to swear an oath of loyalty to His Majesty Napoleon III, and this does not prevent them from being Masons at heart [...] The weapons used by the Gr. Master of the G. Or. are vile, and every day the point is dulled [...] " (Lyon, 29 November 1859).
- by Brother François-Louis MOITIÉ DE COULOMMIERS to the Administrative and Executive Commission of the Supreme Council for France, in which he refers to the Grand Orient lodge "Parfait Silence": "[...] there [is] one, Parfait Silence, which is the fly in the ointment, has been leading everything and wanting to dominate everything for ten years. Under the government of Prince MURAT, the ven[érable] of this L[oge] M r Ducasse, a violent, brutal man and something more, had obtained a Decree which forced all the
Lodges to take shelter under the Temple of Perfect Silence [...] The Lodge of Perfect Silence is furious, its wounded pride explains the blow that has been dealt to us [...] The enemy is there, and perhaps he is serving the anger of someone greater than himself? [...]" (21 July 1862; 3 pp., with repeated wet stamp).
