Description
Ceremonial spoon, Iran qâjâr, dated 1241 H / 1825
Disc-shaped steel object with a long handle, the ends finely openwork decorated with bifid palmette scrolls and an inscription containing the name Muhammad, the ends in the form of palmiped heads. On the handle, gold damascened decoration of a religious inscription
religious inscription, an extract from the Prayer of the Table (Do'a al-Sofra) in Persian, completed with the date AH 1241 / 1825.
Length: 35 cm
Minor traces of oxidation.
Despite its circular shape and long handle, which might suggest a hand mirror, this object is more likely to be associated with the art of the table, as suggested by the inscription on its handle taken from the Do'a al-Sofra (Prayer of the Table). Its beautiful damascene work and the quality of its openwork decoration make it a ceremonial object, transforming the meal into a genuine religious act.
