CHINA, Qing Dynasty, 18th century
Rare and important cinnabar lacquer box, circular in shape, the lid presenting an elegant decoration depicting a scene featuring the Eight Immortals (Bāxiān, 八仙): while two are crossing a bridge over tumultuous waves and accompanied by a deer, four others are depicted on a terrace of a pavilion partially obscured by pine trees, and two others are standing on a boat. The scene is bordered by a double frieze of Grecians and peaches, bats and flowers. The borders are decorated with medallion flowers on a floral brocade background. The back and underside are black lacquered.
