Accents and restorations
This sculpture, carved from a large block of red alabaster, depicts Christ,
with his arms bound and resting on the column, one hand on his heart and his head bent forward in an attitude of gentle resignation just before his scourging. This iconography of the suffering Christ was particularly widespread after the Counter-Reformation, especially in Italy. It is worth noting the rather unusual position of the crossed legs, skilfully separated by the drapery girded at the left hip and folded over the column.
