Anders Pehrson is a Swedish industrial designer and entrepreneur whose creations for Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus helped define mid-20th-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining modernist clarity, technical innovation and a constant focus on user comfort. In 1964, he took over as artistic director of the Ateljé Lyktan workshop, founded in 1934, and brought about a decisive turning point: where his predecessor had focused on bespoke pieces, Pehrson championed an industrial and mass-production approach, creating entire collections of luminaires conceived as ‘families’. His philosophy is summed up in one conviction: “Good lighting is not always about having a lot of light, but always about having several light sources.”
Among his most iconic creations are the Bumling (1968), which has become one of the absolute benchmarks of Scandinavian design, and the Knubbling (1971). His designs were guided by a philosophy he called “good light” — glare-free lighting, functional construction, and forms that integrate naturally into the modern interior. Rather than treating the lamp as a purely decorative object, Pehrson approached lighting as a matter of comfort, ergonomics and optical control.
The Knubbling floor lamp is the most accomplished expression of this philosophy applied to the domestic space: the dome-shaped shade diffuses a soft, enveloping light, supported by a simple, precise metal stem that recedes into the background to leave the spotlight entirely to the luminous halo. Half a century after its creation, the Knubbling has lost none of its self-evident quality—that of objects which have found their perfect form, once and for all.
